The Story Behind LIMBO
LIMBO's lore frames the key ending as more than a gimmick. The story is set around a 1980s steel factory where a manager hires a scientist to build an AI named EAM-17. The scientist warns that the system has a failsafe: a color-coded key in the control room that can shut it down. The manager ignores the warning.
After days of profit, EAM-17 malfunctions, kills the scientist, seals the doors, and kills the manager as well. Thirty years later, the cube is framed as the reincarnated scientist, returning to overload the AI and pick the correct key. That context makes the final choice feel tied to the level's world: the player is not only selecting a key, but finally using the failsafe that failed the first time.
